This is an easy trail. 1.33 km for the loop. It has a little up and down and circles Anthony Lake. Fee required for parking. Good roads. Take Route 30 (10th St.) West towards Haines. In Haines turn left on Anthony Lake Hwy. Follow Anthony Lake Hwy (NFD 73) until you reach the sign for Anthony Lake. Natural Brook Trout and stocked Rainbow Trout.
Easy hike, 5.24 km round trip. Long drive, but worth the short hike. Travel towards Sumpter from Baker on OR 7, turn right onto Or 410, continue through Sumpter and Granite, continue onto Granite Hill Rd (520), the road become NF 73, turn right on NF 7345 and continue to the end. The last 700 meters or so of the road is poor. You may choose to park a little further down the road and hike to the end. A lookout tower in above the lake on Mt. Ireland.
Unknown difficulty. Unverified trail. Take OR 7 towards Sumpter, turn right on OR 410, pass through Sumpter, turn right onto Cracker Creek Rd towards Bourne, turn left onto Cable Cove Rd (NF 5540) turn onto 920 Rd, follow until the end. Unknown hiking conditions, unknown road conditions. Assume very poor until we update.
Hard hike, 14.46 km round trip. The trail is fairly easing hiking and this would have been rated medium but for 2 things: length and there were dozens of trees across the trail. Cool collapsed and decayed buildings at the end. Take OR 7 towards Sumpter, turn on OR 410 to Sumpter, pass through Sumpter and continue to Granite on 520, which turns into NF 73, at Granite turn left onto Red Boy Rd (24), turn left onto NF 13, hold straight (right) onto Forest Road 1305, turn left onto Forest Road 1310 Park where there is a juncture and private property signs to the right. Walk on the road between the private property signs until there is a gate. This is the start of the trail (an old road).
Easy hike with modest uphill. 2.64 km round trip. This trail comes up on the right side of the lake. Scenic high mountain lake with brook trout. Use directions to Anthony Lake. There is a fee parking area for Black Lake and the Elkhorn Crest Trail right before the Anthony Lakes turn off. There is a spot in the middle of the hike where the trail splits, take the right split and continue up.
Easy Hike. This is part of the Elkhorn Crest Trail, but it takes you to the left side of Black Lake. You need to watch for the lake on your right as you can walk past the lake. Easy trail with mild climbs. 3.2 km round trip. This trail continues to the top of the Elkhorn Mountains and will be featured later. Fee required for parking.
Easy hike with a few steep spots and streams to cross. 4.52 km round trip. Take Route 30 (10th St) to Haines, turn left on Anthony Lake Hwy, continue past Anthony and Grande Ronde Lakes, eventually there will be a sign for Crawfish Lake trail turn left and follow for a short way. This is a dirt road but in good condition. Do not take the first turn for Crawfish Basin. Brooke Trout fishing.
Hard Hike. 13.11 km. Beautiful scenic overlooks of multiple lakes. The approximate halfway point is Dutch Flat Saddle. The trail follows road run to Dutchflat/ Crawfish Basin Trail, to the Elkhorn Crest Trail. Take Route 30 (10th St.) West towards Haines. In Haines turn left on Anthony Lake Hwy. Follow Anthony Lake Hwy (NFD 73) until you reach the sign for Anthony Lake. Park at the lodge or Black Lake/Elkhorn Crest Trailhead. Fee parking site.
Hard scenic trail. Requires overnight camping along the way. 36.75 km long from start to end. Start can be at Anthony Lakes or at Marble Creek Pass. Marble Creek Pass: Route 30 to left on Pocahontas Rd, straight onto Marble Creek Rd, Marble Creek Rd turns into Forest Rd 6510, continue to the top. This is a bad road. 4x4 or AWD with clearance is recommended. Drop off or pick up can be arranged. Overnight backpacking is recommended with potential stops at Dutch Flat Lake, Lost Lake, Twin Lakes or Summit Lake. This is a dry hike but lake water can be purified.
Easy hike. A short mostly uphill trail accessed by a short walk around part of Anthony Lake. 2.32 km round trip. Fee for parking area. Follow the directions to Anthony Lake. 3 beautiful lakes. A fun waterfall at the upper end for kids. Snow frequently stays through July at the upper end. See trail #2 for more details. Small Brook Trout.
Easy hike with modest uphill and downhill. 4.46 km round trip. Follow NFD 7300-185 part way up to the top of the ridge(This can be driven with a AWD or 4x4 vehicle). There is a Hoffer trail sign part way up the road that shows the trail. One can hike one big loop by starting at trail #1 or #2 and hiking through the other trail.
Medium hike, 9.32 km round trip. Take US 30 towards Haines, turn left on Anthony Lake Hwy, turn left onto Pocahontas Rd then a short way right on S Rock Creek Ln, continue on until road turns into NFD Rd 5520, stay on NFD Rd 5520 until the trailhead. The trailhead is not marked but is at GPS -118.106, 44.8868. This is a poor road.
Medium hike, 2.28 km round trip from the trailhead. The trailhead is reached from Anthony Lake by following the Ski Road (FS 185). This is a poor road. For a longer hike park at Anthony (fee required) and hike the road to the trailhead (7.84 km). Stunning views to the West and East. Crawfish Meadow and Lake as well as the Anthony Lakes can be seen.
This is a short, easy jaunt through the woods from Anthony Lake. Round trip distance is 606 meters. Great for really little kids. If you walk around the lake a little you can see tree stumps left by beavers. Follow the driving directions for Anthony Lake only park at the boat ramp instead. This trail connects to an alternate Black Lake trail. Fish were killed off by beaver raising the water level, may or may not have been restocked.

With a map of the general area. These are marked as easy but depending on the length chosen they could move into the medium range. Take Hwy 7 out of Baker City towards Sumpter. Turn left on Forest Rd. 2220 (immediately before the dam).
Hard Short Hike, 7.4 km round trip (variable distance based on how far you can drive). This gets a hard rating because the road is littered with different sized rocks, that roll and slip underfoot. Beautiful views of 2 of the highest peaks in the Elkhorn Mountains. When you reach the reservoir there is a road that curves to the left. Following this road to the end and then climbing the ridge puts you above Rock Creek Lake. Take Pocahontas Rd. from Baker City towards the Elkhorn Mountains, turn left on Pine Creek Ln (Wingville Ln to the right), turn right on Pine Creek Ln again, then left on Pine Creek Ln(the road forks a lot), follow this road to the reservoir. The road gets worse and worse to the point where only a good 4 wheel drive or ATV is going to be able to continue. Park when you cannot continue and hike the rest of the way.
Medium hike, 4 km round trip. Trailhead has an old broken sign. This hike requires driving a very poor road. 4x4, AWD or ATV with High clearance and skid plates is recommended. You may park further down the road and extend the hike due to poor road conditions. Go towards Haines on US 30 (10th St) Turn left in Haines onto Anthony Lake Hwy, turn left on Muddy Creek Ln, turn right onto Foothill Rd, turn left onto Bulger Flat Rd, continue onto NFD Rd 7301. Most people will have to park further down and hike to the trailhead. Brook Trout. This lake is nicknamed Green or Emerald Lake for its stunning color. In fall Red Mountain above the lake turns red.
Hard hike, 10.86 km round trip. Highest major lake, mountain goats abound. Take US 30 towards Haines, turn left on Anthony Lake Hwy, turn left onto Pocahontas Rd then a short way right on S Rock Creek Ln, continue on until road turns into NFD Rd 5520, stay on NFD Rd 5520 until the trailhead. This is a poor road. On the map Bucket Lake sits above Rock Creek Lake. Brook Trout and Mackinaw trout.
2.08 km, Easy trail. Short walk through the woods. Good Early route. This follows mainly roads, with a small section on a trail when moving up from the creek. Take Pocahontas out of Baker, turn left onto Salmon Creek Rd, after passing the lake veer to the left and continue just past the ford in the creek, park at the road that takes off up the hill that has a chain across it, hike on the road to the left.

Medium hike, 15.38 km. Stunning views of Baker and Sumpter Valleys. Mountain Goats can be found here. Marble Creek Pass: Route 30 to left on Pocahontas Rd, straight onto Marble Creek Rd, Marble Creek Rd turns into Forest Rd 6510, continue to the top. This is a bad road. 4x4 or AWD with clearance is recommended.
Hard trail, 15.5 km. From Baker City, Oregon travel south on Highway 7 (also known as the Elkhorn Scenic Byway) towards John Day, Oregon for about 22 miles to Deer Creek Road; Turn right onto Deer Creek Road. The road immediately forks into two roads. Take the left fork (County Road 656). This will turn into FS Rd. 6550. Go about 3.5 miles and cross Deer Creek. This is a 4-way junction. Go straight ahead onto Rd. 030 and follow it for about 2.5 miles. There is a wide spot to park low clearance vehicles at the junction of Rd. 101, or continue left up Rd. 101 for another .3 miles to Twin Lakes Trailhead.
Easy to medium hike (short, but steep uphill in places). 4.62 km round trip. Hiking all the way around the lake adds 1.5 km. This is a natural lake with a small dam to increase water hold for summer irrigation. There is a fun sandbar on the upper end once water has been released for irrigation. Rainbow and Brook Trout fishing. There is a road to the top of the ridge that is very poor and requires a 4x4 with high clearance and skid plates.
Medium hike, 2.58 km round trip, steep up and down hill. Scenic views to the East and West on this hike. There are several optional roads that can be hiked in this area. Take Pocahontas Rd. out of Baker, turn left onto Washington Gulch Rd. There is private property up here, be sure to obey no trespassing signage, in about 3.7 km take the unlabeled road towards the right, in about 1.85 km veer to the left. The road deteriorates some, passenger cars are not recommended, in about 1.25 km a flat spot with ample parking is reached. Start hike up the hill where you see dirt bike tracks, continue up to a road , then follow the road up the hill. on road 7140-220. This takes you to the top of a small ridge.
